Background
Data governance refers to the overall management of data availability, usability, integrity, and security in an organisation. It encompasses policies, processes, and standards that ensure data is accurate, consistent, and used responsibly. Effective data governance involves defining data ownership, establishing data quality standards, and implementing data stewardship roles to oversee data assets. It also includes setting up a framework for data access and sharing, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and providing guidelines for data lifecycle management from creation to disposal.
The importance of data governance has grown with the increasing volume and complexity of data in modern organisations. Proper data governance helps mitigate risks related to data breaches, ensures that data is reliable for decision-making, and enhances operational efficiency by reducing redundancies and errors. It supports strategic objectives by enabling better data-driven insights and fostering trust in the data among stakeholders. Additionally, a robust data governance framework promotes transparency and accountability, ensuring that data practices align with the organisation's values and objectives.
